Childrens parents are asked to put sun protection on their child before the session. Children who attent all day, parents are asked to bring in sun protection for their child with their name on it so children can top up their own protection.”

“We have been enjoying the fabric shade in the front garden.

In the mornings we allow the children to enjoy to the sunshine but when it becomes stronger we encourage them to play under the shade.

We are fortunate in that we also have a large sycamore tree which provides shade, as well as a small side, nature garden, which is shaded by the building.

We also insist that children and staff wear hats if they want to play in the garden.

Parents have responded well to the Sun Safe Nurseries advice.”

Our nursery is surrounded by trees and we use them when appropriate. There is a shaded manmade area at top of our garden and also a shaded sand pit. We purchased 2 gazebos and 1 sun umbrella to use when needed and we ensure the children only go into the sun for short spells.”

“We will put an article in our School magazine the "Hemdean Times" and also on the news feed on our website. I will also forward photos to our press officer and ask her to contact the local papers.

We have made the process into fun and enjoyable set of lessons for the children and all classes have enjoyed the different activities. The message has clearly been taken on board by children and parents alike as the children come to school with sun cream on or have it available in their classroom. They are also far better at putting on their sun hats for break times.

The children constantly remind each other and staff of the important things to remember when playing in the sun and a number of parents have commented on the importance of spreading this message and the worthwhile nature of the initiative.

Hemdean House School Completes Step 4 towards becoming a Sun Safe School - Lesson Plan

Congratulations to Hemdean House School for carrying out the ‘George the Sun Safe Superstar’ Lesson Plan.

“All year groups undertook a PSHE lesson on staying safe in the sun and completed some of the worksheets.

In addition, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 all took part in a lesson reading and discussing the George the Sun Safe Superstar story. They then dressed up in the right and wrong clothes.

Year 3 and 4 enjoyed making origami sunhats and deciding which provided the best protection.

Year 5 did an audit of the shade around the school and Year 6 were involved in storytelling about enjoying summer days safely.

We prepared a Sun Safe Fun Book with games puzzles and activities to do at school and at home.

Staff noted how the children remembered to put on sun cream before going out to play and the playground is a sea of sun hats during break.

Dinton Pre-School Completes Step 2 towards becoming a Sun Safe Nursery - Shade

“We have various shaded areas around our playgrounds, with extra gazebos which are put up in the summer months to provide more shade. Each classroom has a shaded areas directly outside so children can have free flow to a shaded outdoor area and we have a large canopy in the main playground. In our forest schools area and our back garden we also have some willow igloos which can provide shade in these areas. ”
